Back Home Again
On Friday, September 19, 2014, my tour of eight schools in the three counties concluded with a visit to the county where I grew up, Floyd County. Much had changed about the physical buildings, but the great education was still there.

On Friday, September 19, 2014, I toured eight schools in three southern Indiana counties, beginning with Scottsburg High School and Scottsburg Middle School in Scott County. What I saw there was the best in the meaningful use of technology in the classroom.
POTUS and Perkins
On Thursday, May 1, 2014, I had the honor of speaking with the President of the United States in the Blue Room of the White House. After thinking long and hard about what I would say, I delivered a message from my students. I told him that the Latin students at North Central High School in Indianapolis wanted him to know that his last name spelled backward is amabo, the Latin verb meaning "I will love." He looked at the cameraman and laughed, "Well, how about that!"
Indianapolis Indians First Pitch
Sunday, August 17, 2014, was Indiana Department of Education Day at Victory Field, home to the Indianapolis Indians. I had the opportunity to throw out one of the ceremonial "first pitches" and was joined by friends, students, and State Superintendent Glenda Ritz.
International Space Camp
The 2014 State Teachers of the Year joined teachers from ten other nations at U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL, July 18-25, 2014 to train as the astronauts do and get inspired about human achievement in space.
Washington, D.C. State Teachers of the Year Celebration
For a week at the end of April, the Teachers of the Year from around the country convened in our nation's capital for policy work, learning opportunities, and a trip to the White House that included meeting the President of the United States.
